Do you have leaky gut syndrome?

Do you suffer from chronic intestinal distention, diarrhea, or constipation? How about chronic headaches and brain fog or skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea? These could be signs of a leaky gut, a syndrome encompassing these symptoms and several others that are not the same for any one person. Tests often fail to uncover a definite cause of problem, leaving people without a diagnosis.

So what is leaky gut?

Leaky gut is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged causing increased intestinal permeability. When working properly, the intestinal lining acts as a tight barrier that controls the absorption of nutrients in the bloodstream. A damaged lining may have holes or cracks that allow partially digested food and toxins to “leak” into the bloodstream. When this happens, your immune system notices the partially undigested proteins and foods and treats it as foreign substances, leading to inflammation that spreads throughout your body. It could also start attacking your own body, thus destroying tissue in your body (the most common being the thyroid and the joints). This is the reason you experience symptoms of leaky gut anywhere in the body.

Signs that you may have a leaky gut:

  • Chronic digestive issues like diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas
  • Allergies
  • Headaches, brain fog
  • Acne, eczema, rosacea
  • Poor immune system
  • Pains and aches/arthritis
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease, or Crohn’s

What causes leaky gut ?

Leaky gut can be caused by chronic use of medications, antibiotics, or alcohol. Other causes are eating processed foods and having food intolerances. In many cases, a diet that consists of processed/packaged foods and sugar and lacking key essential nutrients puts us at increased risk for intestinal permeability.

So how do you fix it?

The answer to this question lies in eliminating the foods that your body deems toxic and letting the gut lining heal. Testing for food sensitivities helps in recognizing the foods that are harmful to your gut. These are not necessarily foods that you are allergic to, but they play a part in increasing toxicity in your body. Additionally, including healthy fats, omegas, and probiotics restores healthy bacteria to the gut and rejuvenates the lining of the intestinal wall.

If you are experiencing chronic health symptoms like headaches, digestion, skin or autoimmune conditions, the initial step is to ascertain foods that you are reactive to. Determining which foods your immune system is trying to protect you from is essential in halting its progression. At Aldora Injury and Wellness, we can help determine the reactive foods as well as implement dietary changes. We provide integrative medical care in a professional, compassionate, and understanding environment. If you are suffering from any of the symptoms above, contact us today to schedule an appointment.
